The Hunt Gather Thrive Origin Story

That's what the scale said, the morning after we returned from a weeklong cruise to Mexico. That's less than 9 pounds from 200. I couldn't possibly allow myself to get any closer. It was April of 2009 and I was 47 years old. I knew, right then, that I needed to make changes.


About 2 days later, my husband returned from his physical with a diagnosis of early pre-diabetes. Already energized by my own weight issue, I told him, "We are changing how we eat." I think the doc's verdict had a similar effect on him, because he didn't push back at all.


Right around that time, I'd read an article in the local paper about people following this weird "Paleo" diet and describing the benefits they'd seen. It seemed simple enough - eliminate food that had been introduced to humans less than 10,000 years ago. So we tried it.


"Simple" does not mean "easy", but we experimented and persevered, and less than a year later, having arrived at a low-carb Primal way of eating, we realized that, including the two of us and our college-aged daughter, we'd lost a total of 120 pounds. I'd lost 50 pounds myself, from dietary changes only. 


The side benefits were even more amazing. I gained stamina and energy I didn't know I was missing, the aches and pains disappeared, and the arthritis I'd had in my thumbs stopped causing any problems: I can pick up heavy things using a pinching motion with no pain whatsoever. We used to get fairly frequent colds; that stopped, and the few that we caught became very mild and of short duration.


Since that time, I've gained some of the lost weight back, but many of the other benefits have lingered. Maybe the biggest one is why I created Hunt Gather Thrive - I became fascinated about human nutrition and fitness. And I want to use the knowledge I've picked up over the past 15 years to help you.

They help you set and achieve incremental goals along the path to your overall goal, providing you with resources and helping you hold yourself accountable for making change happen. At the end of a coaching engagement, you can look at your accomplishments as the foundation for ongoing improvements in your healthy life.

What a Health Coach Is

A Health Coach brings skills in motivation, habit formation, and guidance to help you change how you approach things like food and exercise and stress management.  We can educate and monitor, and help you think through and execute your plan to improve.

What a Health Coach Is Not

A Health Coach is not a doctor. We cannot diagnose, prescribe, or treat anything. Nothing I say is intended as medical advice, and if you have specific medical questions, I am always going to refer you to your physician.
